Danny Holt is one of a new generation of innovative young musicians
ushering classical music into the 21st century. As a pianist,
he brings his boundless energy and wit to unique interpretations
of new music, 20th century music, and obscure, unusual, and
neglected repertoire. His concerts are multimedia performance-compositions,
where classical music meets rock concert aesthetics and performance-art
sensibility.
Called “exceptional” by the Los Angeles Times, Holt has performed nationwide in venues as diverse as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall (New York), REDCAT (Los Angeles), MASS MoCA (North Adams, Mass.), Machineworks (Portland, Ore.), and Tonic (New York). He has appeared on NBC (WWLP-TV, Springfield, Mass.) and has been heard on NPR (WFCR 88.5, Amherst, MA; IPR 88.7, Interlochen, Mich.) His multimedia performance piece, Eusebius, combined live piano performance with an original film based on Erik Satie’s Vexations. The Sophian (Northampton, Mass.) called the performance “stunning” and “refreshing”. His 2002 debut CD, Right Now, has been called “eclectic and fun” (The Reminder, Springfield, Mass.), “an offbeat take on the classics…cutting edge” (Daily Hampshire Gazette, Amherst, Mass.). In 2005 Holt embarked on his first international solo tour, performing new piano music from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. for audiences across North America and Europe.
A specialist in contemporary music, Holt has twice been a fellow at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute, where he worked with the acclaimed Bang on a Can All-Stars and internationally renowned composers Steve Reich and Louis Andriessen, among others. Holt is a member of the chamber ensemble The Really Hard Rhythm Society, the jazz-classical fusion piano duo New Grooves (with jazz pianist-composer Phil Skaller), and the founder of HE"A"P (Hampshire Experimental “Arts” Project), The Smith College Rhythm Ensemble, and ASSAULT. In 2001, Holt became a Yamaha Young Performing Artist, a distinction reserved for only ten young musicians each year. In 1999 he won a prestigious award from the National Alliance for Excellence, which was presented to him by composer Philip Glass. He has also won awards from ASCAP, the Yvar Mikhashoff Trust for New Music, the American Composers Forum, and the National Federation for Advancement in the Arts.
Holt holds degrees from California Institute of the Arts, Hampshire College, Smith College, and Interlochen Arts Academy. Holt’s compositions were staples on concerts at Interlochen, and he maintained an active performing schedule, presenting solo recitals and touring Michigan as part of a select group of Interlochen pianists. In 1999 he was a distinguished finalist in the Academy’s concerto competition. He graduated from Interlochen with Senior Honors and the coveted Young Artist Certificate, Interlochen’s highest artistic award.
Holt is also intermittently active as an orchestral and chamber percussionist. As a scholar, he has written extensively about the country music industry in Nashville, Tennessee.
