Join pianist Danny Holt as he celebrates the release of his new solo album, “Piano Music of Mike Garson,” now available from Innova Recordings. Holt, whose playing has been described as virtuosic and gregarious in temperament by Gramophone, was awestruck by Garson’s music upon the first hearing. Garson is best known for his longstanding collaboration with David Bowie, which began in 1972. After meeting in 2004, Garson came on to co-produce Holt’s 2009 Innova release "Fast Jump." The musicians share a voracious appetite for new music along with monster piano technique. Garson’s improvisatory compositional approach and wide-ranging interests manifest themselves in a musical voice that is influenced by jazz, rock, and the classical tradition.
Danny Holt will perform selections from the album, and he and Mike Garson will share stories about their collaboration and some of the unique challenges of learning and recording Garson’s music. Garson will also make an appearance at the piano. The event takes place at The Stowaway, a brand new mid-century modern inspired piano bar in downtown Los Angeles offering signature handcrafted cocktails in a spectacular newly-renovated interior. The piano Holt and Garson will perform on is a vintage 1957 Baldwin 7-foot grand (handmade in the USA.) Holt “rescued” the neglected piano in 2019 when it was destined for a landfill, and had it significantly rebuilt. The Baldwin now lives at The Stowaway, and this will be among the first concerts performed on the piano in its new life.
